For Europeans: keep in mind your carbon footprint - take the train! The Cochrane Collaboration encourages its members to do everything they can to help reduce the carbon footprint of our work, however, attendance at the annual Colloquium is vital to our organisation. With this in mind, did you know you can take the train to Freiburg for a price comparable to a plane fare and with only a bit longer journey time? The train is easy and comfortable, and, for those in the UK, all Eurostar journeys are carbon neutral! Info here (www.eurostar.com/UK/uk/leisure/about_eurostar/environment/off_setting.jsp). Sender: MaryEllen Schaafsma [mschaafs@uottawa.ca] Subject: Strategic review of The Cochrane Collaboration In 2008, The Cochrane Collaboration is undergoing a strategic review of the structures, processes and governance of The Cochrane Collaboration. Initial planning and preparations have been completed. The Strategic Review will result in recommendations for the future, taking the Cochrane Collaboration wisely forward over the next 10 years. It will involve a great deal of consultation internally and externally – structured around seven different dialogues (streams of inquiry) to identify themes and potential actions that will lead to strong decision-making within the Collaboration for future success. They are: • 1st dialogue: Purpose • 2nd dialogue: External and Internal Coherence • 3rd dialogue: External environment • 4th dialogue: Financial viability • 5th dialogue: Accountability and decision making • 6th dialogue: Structures and Processes • 7th dialogue: Communication, advocacy and engagement with external stakeholders To learn more, please go to the website at www.cochrane.org/ccsg/review. This will direct you to a site separate to The Cochrane Collaboration. Once on the website, you will find out more about the review, who is involved, who we will be consulting with, what questions will be asked, and what opportunities there are to give your input. The current opportunity for input is: “If Cochrane was a song, it would be....” The Strategic Review Team Jeremy Grimshaw Mary Ellen Schaafsma Lisa McGovern XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX C. Sender: Deborah Pentesco-Gilbert [dpentesc@wiley.com] Subject: Impact factor for The Cochrane Library The 2007 impact factors have now been published by Thomson ISI and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews has an IF of 4.654 and is ranked 14 out of 100 in the ISI category Medicine, General & Internal. Congratulations to you all. The 2007 IF is calculated on the total number of cites in 2007 to articles published in 2006 (2442 cites) and in 2005 (2798 cites) total = 5,240 divided by the total number of articles published in 2006 (575) and 2005 (551) total= 1126. We will be analyzing the data available from ISI to form future communications. In the meantime, should you have any questions please feel free to contact me. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX D. Sender: Deborah Pentesco-Gilbert [dpentesc@wiley.com] Subject: New publication date for The Cochrane Library Please note that the PPG has agreed to a new publication date for Issue 3, 2008, The Cochrane Library as the 16th July 2008. This is a week later than the advertised 9th July 2008 release due to a one-off systems and resource load on Wiley InterScience(WIS) when the Blackwell journals are moved over to WIS during the first week of July. This will not impact on any future deadlines or publication dates for The Cochrane Library. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you and invite you to inform any authors and other stakeholders who may need to know the Issue 3 publication date. The full minutes of that meeting are available on the website at www.cochrane.org/ccsg/index.htm#ccsg . XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX F. Sender: Claire Allen [CAllen@cochrane.org] Subject: Results of Steering Group election Please note, and forward to the members of your entity, the following interim results of this year's elections to the Cochrane Collaboration Steering Group: - Representing Methods Groups: Julian Higgins (UK). - Representing Co-ordinating Editors: Roger Soll (USA) Julian was the only candidate nominated for Methods Groups and Roger was the only person nominated for Co-ordinating Editors; therefore, it was unnecessary to hold an election for these positions. Election statements for both Julian and Roger are available from myself for information only. Julian and Roger will join the Steering Group for three years at the Annual General Meetings during the Freiburg Colloquium, on 5 October 2008 at 4.30 p.m. An election is taking place for the other positions on the Steering Group (CRG Author; CRG 'at large'; CRG Co-ordinating Editor; CRG Review Group Co-ordinator; and Centres). Sender: Jessica Thomas [jessica.papas@gmail.com] Subject: Thank you and farewell to Sylvia Bickley It is time to say goodbye to Sylvia Bickley who will retire at the end of June from her positions as Trials Search Co-ordinator (TSC) for the Oral Health and PaPaS Review Group. Sylvia has worked as a TSC for the Oral Health Group since it was transferred to Manchester in 1996. Over the years she has provided consistently high quality support to literally hundreds of oral health authors whilst also taking care of our Trials Register. She is well known for her sense of humour, her perfectionism and for going out of her way to help people and she will be sorely missed but fondly remembered. The Oral Health Group is very grateful for the time and effort she has put in to training up our new TSC, Anne Littlewood. Sylvia has also worked as a TSC for the PaPaS Review Group since 2000 from where she will also retire. She has been involved in many projects within The Cochrane Collaboration during that time. Sylvia has been a great asset to PaPaS helping with the early set up and tidy up of the PaPaS register, completing the register submissions to CENTRAL, keeping the PaPaS trials register up to date and supporting our many authors to develop their search strategies as well as run their searches. PaPaS are also very grateful for the time and effort she has put in to training up our new TSC, Caroline Struthers and will miss working with her but wish her well in the year ahead. We will all miss her calm, reliable and good natured approach to work, but look forward to keeping in contact with her and hearing all about the wildlife conservation projects she is involved with.
